I had no clue that one could seat a passenger in it. It is definitely my favorite of the home-built warbirds.

Seen at the Chino Airshow on occasion. I think it has been to Oshkosh as well.

The video I included in my post above was from Oshkosh the year it was there (2015). Bob Deford flew it in the airshow displays that year which featured WWII aircraft of the RAF, which also included Jerry Yagen's Mosquito.

Here is a good article about Bob Deford and the aircraft: https://www.spitfiresocietytrustza.org/ ... build-one/

Being a fellow Arizonan I have had opportunity to see the airplane at least half a dozen times, here in AZ as well as at Chino. It really is a magnificent achievement and surely must be one of the most successful replica aircraft ever constructed. Probably a pipe dream to hope that it stays close by but fingers crossed.

For under 1 Mil that is a bloody good price to be honest.

Interesting...he has a P-51 Throttle quadrant in the plane.

Wonder if it's a real 51 quadrant or built by himself or gotten from places like Titan?

I think Mr DeFord was extremely practical when it came to the construction of this terrific replica.
Allison engine, DC-3 prop, why not use a throttle quadrant from a P-51? If it's anything like the rest of it, he probably got a great deal on it!
I can't help but hear all of the purists moaning and groaning over the "innacuracies" of this "Spitfire". Just makes me chuckle to myself.
This aircraft would be a ton of fun, provide one with a real insight to flying a big piston fighter, at a very affordable cost.
May her next custodian, be able to enjoy, as much as they can! :drinkers:

Does anyone know if you can see Mr. Deford's Spitfire in Prescott? I have to pass through next month, and thought I might just stop and check it out, if that's a possibility.

Personally I would rather own this plane than a "real" Spitfire.

If I could own it I would give it a civilian paint job, take it to airshows and park it in the home build area.

I hope he gets a good price for it. I’ve seen it and it finished out nicely. If it were mine, I might repaint it like one of the Spifires used by the Americans. Bob Hoover flew Spitfires, so that would be a nice scheme.

No moaning coming from me - I simply made an observation. I like the layout of the -51 quadrant and am thinking of building one with that layout for my plane - which also isn't a P-51

My dad owned Bob Hoover’s first yellow P-51. N2251D. Bob or Cavalier changed out the P-51D throttle quadrant for the much improved T-28 quadrant. The T-28 quadrant is more comfortable and you can make throttle adjustments with a slight flick of the wrist. It’s more precise for formation and aerobatics . So for me, I would use an original Sputfire quadrant or just go with the superior T-28 quadrant.

This is a magnificent achievement. The vast majority of homebuilt projects never make it past the first couple of months before the builder concedes defeat and heads for the golf course, but the amount of work that obviously went into this thing is staggering! That airplane could have a J-3 throttle quadrant, a shark's mouth, and invasion stripes painted with metallic paint and I'd still be impressed! Looks like an original windshield on it, too. And unlike most replicas out there, this thing actually LOOKS LIKE a Spitfire!!
