Amazon Prime is offering The Great War of Archimedes, a 2019 film which fictionalizes the decision to build the super battleship Yamato. To quote Wiki... "Admirals Yamamoto and Nagano believe that battleships are becoming obsolete, and advocate building a new aircraft carrier instead, but they are opposed by the Navy's old guard."
The film starts with ship's sinking in 1945. The reason I mention it here on WIX is TBMs and SB2Cs are shown in the battle. Some of the CGI is very good, other not so much, still it's a rare chance to see the aircraft in action.
In the middle of the intense battle, an American aircraft is shot down And in the middle of the attack, a PBY appears and under intense fire, rescued a crewmember. If it really happened like that, my hat's off to the PBY crew, but I have a hunch it was added for dramatic effect.
And for Pacific War history buffs, it dramatizes the forces at play in the run up to the Pacific war. If you haven't read much about that, you'll likely find the film interesting or educational. I find the topic inteteresting, then again I took modern Japanese history in college. I swore I'd never do that again...so I took it in grad school.
Some of the dialog is a bit rudimentary, my guess it lost something in the translation (as the film was well regarded in Japan and nominated for awards) but given its subject, it's worth 2 hours of your time.
