Years ago my father was an engine tech (fitter) on the CF-100 in the RCAF and he said one night, a rocket armed CF-100 crew was preparing to start up for a training flight when all of a sudden all the rockets fired out of one of the wingtip mounted pods. I think the rockets were warheadless training rockets, but I imagine it was still pretty exciting! The Air Force investigated the incident and discovered that the rocket firing cannon plug and the nav light cannon plug were the same type of plug and when the pods had been fitted to this machine the techs accidentally wired the rocket pod to the position lights switch! Fortunately nobody got hurt but there was a small mod made to the airplanes after that. :D

When you read the Project: FICON articles, the pilots had a hard time lining-up with the wing tip being at the end of the pendulum, the fighter would be all over the place. Someplace there is an article on the wing-tip pod that was installed on EB-17G 44-85784 and how the trained pilot got very sick because of the gyrations

On the other hand... a significant load of rockets made the Zurakowski Cartwheel possible!

You'd really really wouldn't want those two central mounted rockets to fly off slightly crooked right?

Having weight towards the tips reduces upward bending forces at the wing root. Many aircraft thus have armament or fuel tanks out there.
