Before V-J Jay, the Netherlands received 40 P-51Ds for use by the Netherlands East Indies Air Force. They were operated by Nos 121 and 122 Squadrons of the Netherlands Army Air Corps. When the war against Japan ended, Dutch Mustangs were used in a futile attempt to suppress the Indonesian nationalists. When Indonesia became independent on December 27, 1949, its air arm (the Angkatan Udara Republic Indonesia, or AURI) was slated to receive two squadrons of F-51D Mustangs from the departing Dutch. In June of 1950, the Netherlands East Indies Air Force was officially disbanded and the surviving Mustangs were transferred to the Indonesian Air Force. Indonesian Mustangs participated in several internal conflicts and remained in service with the IAF until replaced by Russian fighters in 1959.

around 1980 Ralph Johnson, owner of B-29 "Fertile Mertile" imported 14 or 15 of these to Oakland, CA, he sold them for about $150K as kits.

Some great photos there!

Interesting to see these, as one of those schemes was briefly seen back on a Mustang and in the air in 1994, using lots of stick-on plastic.

Thanks for posting some great photographs.

Just to add a little bit to the story in that these 40 Mustangs which were initially delivered to Australia from the United States of America being received between the 9 May 1945 and the 30 August 1945. The Mustangs about a month later were then "Issued to NEI Pool", however some aircraft would spend longer at the RAAF Air Depots with the last ones being Issued on the 29 March 1946.

That's the Swedish SE-BKG 'Gul Kalle', we operated her in DBAF from Eindhoven AFB in Netherlands besides our B-25.

That's interesting as the Air Force Museum here in New Zealand has a P51D paintes as a RNZAF example but was actually an ex Indonesian one swapped for a T11 Vampire in the 1980s.
