as for the invasion stripes, they were their for the cause...... i.d. friend or foe for the mission. as to the sharks teeth....... complete "esprit de corp" & great for morale!!

As far as shark mouths and invasion stripes. The key to everything is the right dosage. Too much of a good thing, you know.

Invasion stripes over and under, D-Day and immediately afterwards, lower only stripes by order well past D-Day with top side stripes removed or painted over to obliterate them. look at the belly of Maj. Webbs 'D' and the top side of that A-20 on just how haphazardly the stripes were installed, on the evening of 6/5/44 using wall paper brushes by anyone caught with nothing to do that evening! Webbs wing stripes spread out like warm butter, a 'details' note to modellers as well as guys doing a Riddler Award stye laser perfect striping set up on their P-51, none were done with a carpenters square and a chalk snap line until after the fact-

Actually stripes were applied over night June 3-4 since take-off was to be about 21:45 DBST (June 4) in order to start putting troops on the ground at appx 00:15 on June 5....Of course the invasion was postponed for 24 hours so the planes sat around striped for 24 hours.....amazing the bad guys didn't get wise to something during that time!

In the middle of the pack of great photos is a flight of "P-51 D's of the 339th FG", isn't the background aircraft really not a "D" model but an earlier one with a "Malcolm Hood" ?

Why so negative?

I've seen both on too many aircraft that shouldn't have them...L-3, RV-4s, Navions...all fine aircraft, but none should have them.

But it's not anything that keeps me up nights.

And yes, somebody will probably come up with a photo of a Korean war Navion with a shark's mouth.

Andy I don't believe this is the same #33. I may be wrong but I believe the P-38 in the photo and the one being restored at Westpac are two different airplanes. I believe there's a thread or two here somewhere that discusses this.

I think Mark is right on this, Japanese Sandman II is apparently in Jerry Yagen's hands somewhere in the southern hemisphere. At least that's the rumor.

I agree with JohnB, shark mouths don't really look good on everything, not a huge fan of them on B-17s and L-4s, but love them on B-24s, P-51s, and P-40s of course.

D-Day stripes? Love them! Never enough of them, especially some of the recent aircraft that had them applied properly with mops, and brushes.

P-47D 42-27249 was assigned to the 377th Ftr Sq, 362nd FG. It was lost 26 November 1944 near Schonberg, Belgium; pilot 1LT Fred C. Ford was KIA
