Did a search and was not able to find that this was posted before. Though long, the story is quite interesting!

There have been at least two books written about this story. One, "The Long Way Home" IIRC, is a factual retelling of the story. Can't remember the author's name but it was published by the small publishing hose Palawdr Press. Factual ( as far as is known) and a good read. The other was a poorly-written novel that I never finished (nor can I remember the title. Both are gone from my library now...
A truly heroic tale of American ingenuity and persistence; I wish that a 314 had been saved to better remember what the Pan Am crews did.
