Warbird Information Exchange

I Ive been looking in here for ages (all good stuff!) but as I am going to San Diego in the middle of feb for a couple of weeks I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of any places/museums that I ought to check out!

I'm going with my partner but as she is not into aicraft I have only got a couple of days to do 'proper stuff'

any advice info would be most welcome

Welcome to the WIX! San Diego is a great place to visit with lots to do. Warbird related stuff includes visits to the San Diego Aerospace Museum in Balboa Park www.aerospacemuseum.org the Flying Leatherneck Museum at Miramar MCAS www.flyingleathernecks.org and the USS Midway Museum www.midway.org. While in Balboa Park spend some time just walking around to take in some of the beautiful sites in the park. I would also suggest driving out to Pt. Loma at the entrance to San Diego Harbor. This vantage point offers some excellant views of the city. The San Diego Zoo is one of the finest zoos in the world if you are into that kind of thing. Sea World is there also and Disneyland isnt far off. I hope this helps you out. PS: A great place for dinner is Tom Hamm's Lighthouse located right on the harbor. The view of the skyline at night from there is great. When you get back from your trip there let us know how it went.

Brown Field, some 15 miles towards the Mexican border, has a museum, but you need to call in advance, because the only time I was there, the museum was supposed to be open, but it wasn't . . .

You should also consider going to Gillespie Field, in El Cajon (East on I-8) where there is an annex to the San Diego Aerospace Museum, as well as interesting aircraft to be seen. The CAF has a squadron based there, but they were in the process of moving since they lost the lease in one of their hangars.

as we are going to do a bit of a drive around - is there anything interesting in southern cali which would be worth a look - Im planning a route so I could organise to 'accidently' drive past something interesting!!!!

Seaside by National City, U.S. Pacific Fleet (don't know the exact name of the outfit) vessels.

If you are lucky, a couple of aircraft carriers can be seen from the deck of the USS Midway.

If you like aquariums, then Scripps Oceanographic Institute at La Jolla is a must see, and so is the Monterey Bay Aquarium; the drive on the coastal Highway between San Diego and L.A. is a must; and since you say you will be driving . . . if you have the time, you should drive to Chino and visit Planes of Fame and Yanks Air Museum.

Check out the Allen Airways Museum @ Gillespie. Bill owns a a Fairey Firefly, Steve McQueens old Stearman, a Ryan PT-22 and a Ryan STM. He has hundreds of old posters and a small movie theater. The trick is to catch him there. There are no specific hours and it is not open to the public. Cheers.

How to keep the lady friend happy:

Spend an afternoon walking around Old Town San Diego,



Watch the sunset from Pesidio Park,


Then have dinner at the Zócalo Grill.

I remember a Mexican restaurant in old-town that looked and smelled out of this world (insert Alien joke here). I can't remember the name but I’ve been told it’s as good as I thought it would be. (I think its Rancho El Nopal)

Next time we won't be with my wife's friend how refused to eat Mexican /southwest food. Instead it was Jack-in-the-Box and other crap fast food.

One of a few hand full of things I miss about California is the food.

Skip the zoo, Boring and its not all that.

A nice area that also over looks NAS North Island is Cabrillo State Park. Nice walks and beautiful views.

I envy you guys. I've always wanted to get down to southern California. If you don't have any be sure to stop and pick-up some shorts, flip-flops and sunglasses. Relax and enjoy, you'll find plenty to see, do and eat.
