Edgar Mithcell, the 6th man to walk on the surface of the Moon with Alan Shepard during the Apollo 14 mission, died late on Thursday. Ironically, the 45th anniversary of the Apollo 14 mission is taking place right now.

I thought this was important enough to share here and Edgar Mitchell served in the US Navy as a carrier pilot.

As far as I know, Ed's passing marks the first entire Apollo crew to have gone west - except, of course, the first Apollo crew in 1967. Ad astra, Ed, and thanks for the many wonderful memories!

Correct...with the notable exception of the crew lost in the Apollo 1 fire, the crew of Apollo 14 is the fist flown Apollo crew to have passed away (Shepard, Roosa and Mitchell). Sadly, time is slowly taking our space pioneers and it hardly gets noticed in the press. Of the 12 Moonwalkers, there are now 7 remaining...

RIP and thank you for your service. When I worked at American Eagle, Alan Shepard came through my gate. It was a pleasure to shake his hand...
