Warbird Information Exchange

In the last 35 years or so I have been able to view probably 5 of the dozen or so flying B-17s. I have seen two of them several times. I actually got to fly in one of them. Of the dozen or so flying B-17s which are the most complete and authentic in terms of presentation? Not so much paint scheme but equipment fit especially systems and armament. I know most have turrets for example but are they complete and operational or just mounted for show? I have seen on one aircraft steel drums mounted for oil tanks. On another the turrets had no wiring connected to them. I guess what I really want to know is which flying B-17 is closest to operational to WW2 standards?

I agree.Back in the early 90s the bomb aimers panel was wired and everything worked and I mean everything.The top turret powered up as well.

As far as a static restoration...the Shoo Shoo Baby at Dayton. Beautiful inside and I believe all of it worked when delivered to the museum.

Most complete B-17 flyer?

The most complete B-17 flyer is almost certainly Nine O' Nine with the Colling's Foundation. That said, you must discard absolutely everything about her color-wise.

The most complete static was probably My Gal Sal before she was moved to New Orleans, with Boeing Bee and Shoo Shoo Baby coming in close second. My Gal Sal, though, holds a special place in being one of, if in fact the, only B-17s to have correct interior colors and wall upholstery.

I would think that the Memphis Belle will take over the distinction of "most accurate" once she's finished.

I would venture to say B-17G Mary Alice is the most accurate restoration, flying or non-flying. The paint job that was put on her a few years ago is a little too dark, in my opinion. Give it a few years and she'll fade to the right hue. She's the only existing B-17 that I know of that actually has the pilot's armor plating installed - A key detail of a combat Fortress that has been overlooked in literally every post-war restoration.

I would venture a guess as to say that either:

A. The pilot's armor plating is practically nonexistent today, hence the lack on originals or reproductions.

B. That the pilot's armor plating is cumbersome, in the way, or too heavy for modern B-17 operations.
