USS Alabama Crew Reunion Yak Attack

This was the 50th Anniversary of the USS Alabama's Crewmans' Assn., so we did a little something special for them. Two local guys with Yaks replaced the five point stars with meatballs and "attacked" the ship. WE "fought back" with a gas op M1917 and a bird cannon. The Vets loved it, and the visitors were ptetty enthuiastic too.....

Crying shame they couldn't move a turret and simulate a firing of the main guns like they did in the early 90s when filming, "Under Seige" on that ship.

The main battery was not used for anti-air on US warships. There is a plan
to have one of the Bofors modified to simulate fire using propane and oxygen.
Doing the same thing with some 20MM Oerlikons has been discussed as has
getting one 5" to simulate fire. It sounds pretty good with the gas-op M1917
and a bird cannon. Contributions anyone? This stuff doesn't come free. Oh
wait, we had that discussion last week about a second hangar for NNAM to get
the planes out of the weather. Who has contributed to that cause yet? Who
wants to help us?? My magic wand is broken.

Yes, I am painfully aware of this.
I was just making the comment based on the type of ordnance that was used and how the public loves, "stuff what goes boom."
I've always been curious how they moved the turret and tubes during the movie filming and what they used to simulate the main gun firing like they did. I visited the 'Bama apparently right after the helicopter explosion scene had been filmed and did a double take at seeing the wrong ship's name on the fan tail and areas roped off. A volunteer explained what was going on. I totally missed the sub mockup or it was simply wasn't there in the day time.
But the last time I was though there a year and half ago, I donated more than a few bucks to the cause.
