Greetings all from Adelaide South Australia
I stumbled upon this site whilst looking for information re SNJ-5B's so this is my first post
I am a retired person who has a very strong aviation obsession and one thing that I do is that I keeping a data base of the Australian VH register with all the changes and this is who I found this site
We have had a NA SNJ-5 Texan, Con No 88-15312, ex N3274G, Bu43647(SNJ-5) 41-34382 (AT-6D-NT) that has been registered here since 01/02/1990 as VH-OVO in the latest up date of the VH register there has been a change where by a "B" has been added so we now have SNJ-5B. So I am wondering if there is any one out there that can enlighten me as to what changes were made from the 5 to 5B. Were they a factory change or a field change and if possible dates and serial numbers
It maybe my 71 year old eye sight but I do not seem to be able to find any thing re 5B's on this site
So over to to all you more knowledgeable folk

PS Will be working as a volunteer at the Australian Airshow held from the end of February to the begining of March

An SNJ-5B was a -5 that was converted to a "dedicated" gunnery trainer during O&R at
NAS Pensacola. SNJ-5Bs were used for tactical training in the Naval Air Basic Training Command.

Thanks Bela for your reply which now has me a little bit confused as I have just received an email from the current owner of VH-OVO and he is of the opinion that it has something to do with a conversion to the electrics that is from 12v to 24v
The other thing is why is there so little information on the 5B's even on this site

All SNJ-5 / AT-6D aircraft came with a 24 volt electrical system from the factory (one of the
major differences between the SNJ-4 / AT-6C and SNJ-5 / AT-6D). SNJ-4 / AT-6C aircraft
had 12 volt electrical systems from the factory.

A -5B was "field converted" by the Navy, much like -5C SNJs were field converted by
the Navy for carrier use. There is probably a Tech Order floating around out there that
describes, in detail, what the -5B conversion involved.
