Curtiss P-40 39-280 Per J Baugher: w/o Sep 10, 1944 at Randolph Field, Texas. Scrapped at Randolph Field Aug 31, 1946

Those pilots both look pretty happy to be flying. I would be too!

P-36 was being used as a trainer at Eagle Pass in Texas I think in that picture.

Just out of curiosity, why wouldn’t they be wearing leather helmets instead of garrison caps?

The P-40 photo is likely taken during its time at 98th SEFTS during 1943.

It had a fun and varied life, being accepted on the 3rd Sep 1940, initially on strength with 77PS/20PG, was damaged in a ground loop in Jan 41 at Hamilton, next issued to 42PS, again wrecked when the Undercarriage collapsed at Felts Fld in Dec 41.

After this I lose track of it until it appears at 98th SEFTS in 1943 (I believe this photo was taken during this time period), it suffered at the hands of the trainee Pilots being damaged in a Landing accident at Foster Fld Apr 1943, and again in Jun 43 (same airfield). To round out its service it continued in training units, being damaged twice more (Taxing accident at Seguin Fld in Jan 44 and a landing accident at Randolph Fld in Sep 44) finally she was allowed to rest from being repaired a bit and continued service until she scrapped at Randolph Field May 1945
