The battle of Iwo Jima commenced. What was supposed to be a clean up operation after heavy bombardents from the air and from the sea, ended up being a 6 week long nightmare of a battle taking the lives of 6,800+ Americans and 21,000 Japanese. We can never forget the sacrifies made there.

I think that 'nightmare' is a very relevant word.
