www.azcentral.com/news/arizona/free/201 ... ation.html Interestingly enough the memorial includes one of the 14" main guns from the USS Arizona and a 16" gun from the USS Missouri. I had no idea a main gun from the USS Arizona was still around. I knew during 1942 all the guns with the exception of the front turret were removed from the ship and used as coastal batteries. I was always under the impression those guns were then scrapped at war's end. I wonder if the USS Missouri just gave up one of their main guns for this memorial?

I'd guess they're the gun barrels...and there were spares...perhaps the one from the Missouri served on it at one time. I'm sure she has her full compliment docked at Pearl Harbor.


At Sky Harbor airport in Phoenix they had (and probably still do) a large scale model of the USS Arizona, I always enjoyed looking at it., not knowing much about battleships (especially the older ones like the Arizona) I found it interesting.

The gun was part of the USS Arizona from 1925 to 1938 and used in support of multiple World War II operations - including the D-Day invasion on June 6, 1944 - after its installation aboard the USS Nevada in 1942. The gun fired 244 rounds between June 25, 1943, and Aug. 26, 1944.

The gun barrel - removed from the Arizona to be relined before World War II - was at the Dahlgren Naval Proving Ground for proof testing when the attack on Pearl Harbor occurred Dec. 7, 1941.
