Uh oh Mark, looks like CDF is making a run on your territory with these awesome photo sets!

This is great stuff, the pic of that pilot with the EPIC MUSTACHE is absolutely fantastic. Good luck getting an oxygen mask fastened around that, LOL!

Wonderful pictures of those RAAF Libs. My father was a flight mechanic on them for a while. :drink3:

Do you have any of the RAAF Fairy Battles. He spent time on those at Evans Heads....

Thanks for posting these great photos!!

In relation to the one titled "Squadron Leader F.M. Timms of Wollstonecraft, N.S.W., R.A.A.F. member of the Joint Staff Mission, Washington, inspecting the last B24 to leave the Douglas Modification Centre, Oklahama, for Australia", you may be interest to know this aircraft didn't actually leave for Australia. It was only 75% complete when the deliveries were cancelled at wars end. Maybe there was some war effort public relations "speak" were involved in the story.

Other photographs of "Tulsa Joe", probably taken at the same time, show it had a Tulsa contractor number of 117 which equates to the B-24J-5-NT with serial number 44-28181, ending up at Kingman smelter.

The last allocated B-24 to leave Tulsa was a B-24J-1-NT serial number 42-78721 on 17 August 1945 arriving at Long Beach on 20 August 1945, it was soon joined on 23 August 1945 by the only completed B-24 from NWA St. Paul Mod Centre, it was also originally a B-24J-1-NT serial number 42-78710 making a total of four RAAF allocated North American Aviation built B-24s waiting at Long Beach for the next hop. There were approximately 100 other allocated NAA B-24's at either Tulsa or St.Paul modification centres awaiting or under modification.

Wondered if you can provide any further details on the source/s of the varoius photos and their captions?

Mark

The lat few posted B-24 photos were no doubt taken at RAAF Tocumwal located in northern Victoria. It was a large Liberator base and post-war was the scrapping site for many RAAF aircraft. See http://www.tham.org.au as it has numerous photos of the scrapping operations (Mosquitos, Mustangs, Libs, et.al.).

What's up with the mods on this aircraft? There's some sort of sighting blister just ahead of the wing, and a large circular opening in the belly ahead of the bomb bay.
