Maybe they should start selling some stuff off to cover operating expenses...

I'm slightly confused, because when I've visited in the past they always say that they receive no federal funding and they rely solely on private funding, ie donations. I've been wrong in the past of course, just ask my lovely wife...

Being on USAF property, I assume the Air Force has some jurisdiction over the museum in terms of security and other operations. We're going to be in Cincinnati this weekend, and were planning to spend a day at the museum. Guess we'll check out the Cincy zoo instead..the animals there are probably more civilized than the critters in D.C.

It is the same with the National WWII memorial, this is privately funded by a foundation as well. The feds are deliberately ensuring that public venues and services are closed, even in some cases where the states have offered to specifically fund them for the federal government. It doesn't necessarily have a relation to how much or little federal money is spent on it. I'll let you determine for yourself why that might be.

If I remember correctly, the day to day operation of the museum comes directly from the USAF's budget. The very first building constructed in the early 70's was a 50/50 split between govt funds and private donations. Subsequent to that, all of the other buildings constructed were done so with 100% donated funds.

The way the knuckleheads in Wash DC are moving on this issue, the museum will be closed for quite awhile.

"Make it hurt!" I can only imagine what strings Washington would be willing to pull in a real national emergency. Running people out of private homes built on Federal land, placing cones along the highway so people can't stop to take pictures of (privately funded) Mt. Rushmore. Wiring shut open-air parks. Arresting Vietnam vets for 'loitering' at the Vietnam Memorial, etc. And this is just pity-pat stuff resulting from pity-pat politics. Imagine if Washington really felt the need to dramatically adjust public behavior on a grand scale!
