Very nice historical film. Wish we still did that today. Might make some people realize how far we've come and how hard our guys work to hit only the right target every time.

Awesome video! I'd love to see that B-17/B-25/B-29 formation at an airshow...

Too bad the video is not distinct enough to make out the serial of the B-17, because what is interesting is that the aircraft is 1) not a QB- or DB-17 which would be part of the normal Eglin inventory; 2) it is not a VB- or RB-17, the former of which was still in regular USAF inventory (in declining numbers); and 3) it doesn't appear to be any of the remaining EB-17's or similar aircraft that were among the last survivors (one of which is now Chuckie). So what is it? If anyone can do a better job of making out the serial I'd love to hear your opinion. The best I can do is that is either a 44-83 or 44-85 start.

Matt, that was actually a B-50 in the formation apparently filling the role of a "B-29." Would love love to see a tall tail R-4360 powered B-50 back in the air but know that is unlikely. I patiently await the return of a C-97 to the air to get my Four R-4360's fix!

Great video of a time when there were a lot of very interesting airplanes in the Air Force Inventory.

I wonder if the Spad & Nieuport were replicas or the "real deal"?

oh oh oh! What a wonderful video! All my favorite cold war USAF planes! :o :supz:

I wish they had airshows like that today. even a B-36 bomb drop! MY god! :prayer: :prayer:

Why don't they have shows like this anymore?

the 50's to early 60's were the best aviation time in the U.S. IMHO!

The real B-29s were filling the role of "targets."

Let's run some serials:
F-100D 55-3706: "to range at Eglin AFB late 1976 or early 1977." (oh the irony...)
F-100C 54-2087: "to MASDC Jul 19, 1971 as FE072. To Turkish AF. Crashed during gunnery training mission at Konya Sep 9, 1985"
F-100D 55-3709: "to MASDC Jul 27, 1979 as FE565. Converted to QF-100D."

Is the P-51D the Air Museum's Spam Can?

I AGREE Nathan! The late 40's through the mid-60's are my favorite period in aviation history. A true golden age with such an amazing variety of interesting military and civilian aircraft flying.

In the Steve Canyon DVDs there is an episode with footage that looks like Eglin showing B-29 targets.

I grew up there. Eglin usually had a Firepower Demonstration every one to two years until the end of the Vietnam War. Granted, you had to be invited... My dad helped develop many of the mods and odds on tactical aircraft.

I remember watching the one that they used the footage for the John Wayne movie -- The Green Beret. The announcer clued everyone in on what the town target was.

My dad would tell me of all the declared emergencies from hotshot pilots who either took it too low or made too steep of a dive bombing run and took either fragmentation or ricochet from their runs. My first was in the mid-sixties and the last was in 72. Great times.

One of those "early birds" was a Boeing P 12. I think in 1957 the only one flying would have been with Frank Tallman and I believe he had a Spad and Nieuport as well. Would he have brought them to FL from CA?
