Stencils.... folks to make them?

All-

I thought I had a source to make stencils for me for our T-6 project. I don't want to use vinyl graphics... I'd rather paint. The source wanted to use vinyl to make the stencil.... t expensive, one time shot, doesn't peel off clean. I want/ wanted a the thick stock almost cardboard paper as the basis for the stencils.

I have a source for US stencils. But these are RAF Roundels, with the RAF font. Anyone have any ideas for someone who can cut these stencils?

You might ping Taigh, I believe his daughter has been doing some work like this for their PV-2 project. (See the "Tanker 101" thread at the top of the page)

After some calling (like to Rick at MilitaryStencils) folks can't do an oil-board stencil using a computer font. So I guess that answers that. It'll have to be vinyl decals. Bummer, at least it will save me from masking off the airplane to do the painting.

If you want cardboard stencils, why not get the stickers, put them on cardboard and make your own cardboard portion from them....?

What you want is a vinyl mask. It is put on, painted over, and then the vinyl is removed.

Phillip does lots of aircraft stencils, and researches paint schemes down to the gnata axe if needed.

If you have the font I have a place that does great work. They make the stencil in adhesive vinyl and then you just peel it off and chuck it when you're done.

Scott....why not make your own? Type in Stencil Machine in the E-bay search and there are a bunch of the hand operated manual stencil cutters listed from 1/2" to 1" anywhere from $200 to $500. You can only do one line at a time but if there was a block of letters, you could cut and tape them together. Take a look and see if they might work.....

Thanks for the inputs guys... I don't particularly like vinyl, I'd rather paint. But the issue is the Font.... the RAF Font is different than the US Stencil font. I will use vinyl rather than do US Stencils. This airplane is a Harvard II and is going back in 'as delivered' paint.

If you have pictures of what you want done I may be able to laser cut the stencils for you. I can create the art work myself and while it will be more work than using an "off the shelf" font it will be as accurate as the information you provide. Chad - would you have a copy of the US military stencil alphabet from then? Or know exactly what the font was called?

The RAF fonts are available 'off the shelf'. I used to have them and the Luftwaffe fonts one hard drive crash ago.
A little searching on model or sim fora will find TrueType fonts for the four or five major variations the RAF used for lettering.

I don't know if you've tried him, but Ken Wilson has been the "go-to" guy for Stearman stencils for over 30 years. He's a phenominal historian on markings, and has a full set-up of WWII surplus stencil machines. He hand makes each one. I used to know his prices, but email him for current rates. He also advertises government history reports and stencil sets for most WWII aircraft.

Thanks, I know Ken Wilson well and have bought two full sets of Stearman stencils from him. But what I am looking for are British stencils, all the US stencil machines use the US font.... I don't want that. Ken does excellent work for US stuff, but to my knowledge does not cover foreign aircraft. I'll ask just to make sure.

Give Phil Fox (woodway signs) a call and talk to him. He did the stencils for LSFM's Hurricane, Raybourne Thompsons Spitfire and many, many other warbirds. He can do wonders with this stuff, and has a very impressive font library.
