Grumman Albatross sales

Sun May 05, 2013 9:53 am

Just curious to see how many albatross there are to be bought for a restoration project. It's one of my favorites, and want to look more into the current disposition of airframes that are just sitting for somewhere; either waiting for the smelter or some other fate. Any idea what the average price might be for one of them? It's also partially day dreaming on a day off here in Gainsville, FL. I saw one a few months ago parked at Opa Lacka towards Miami, would like to know the story of that.

There were actually 2 Albatrosses at Opa Locka back in 2011, my last 2 visits to OPF in fall of 2012 it was nowhere to be found, nor was the bare metal C-123 that was parked there in 2011 (near the Coast Guard station). The one Albatross was missing its wings past the engines. Sadly a lot of the aircraft you last seen at Opa Locka parked in that area if they weren't sold and flown out end up getting scrapped. There was a really nice private 707 N88ZL that had been moved from mid field to the scrapping area on the southeast corner in December 2012 - while it was nice to be able to easily shoot the 707 from the fence, I worried about its fate. The 747 of Air One that been parked there for several years was getting scrapped while I was there.

There are two for sale now on trade a plane. Both previously owned by the surf company billabong.

I got to walk through one of them after my buddy did the upholstery work.

The 123 I believe you are talking about is the 123 the Hagerstown museum will be acquiring. More than likely it, it's in a hangar being prepped for ferry to Maryland.

Ive never been to opa locka, so I don't know if there is even a hanar big enough for it, but it's deffinately still on the field somewhere.

There is a very nice flying hu-16 for sale right now with courtesy.
