I'm very glad they decided to restore this one-of-a-kind P-51 back to it's racing heyday. I believe there was some talk about converting her back to original stock WWII condition but Im glad common sense won out in the end.

Thanks for the link.
Really cool to see the shout out from Tiger Destefani in the comments section. Classy!

Best of luck with this interesting and historical Mustang.

Very cool! Some years ago, I started a model of this airplane based on the ancient (first generation) Airfix P-51D kit, because the radiator scoop on that kit was so inaccurately shaped it seemed best to razor-saw it off completely. Lots of good pics of this airplane in the Racing Thoroughbred book (might have even been a whole chapter on it). I'll have to see about rescuing that project from the Shelf of Doom...will be interesting to see if they can get the real one restored before I can finish my little toy model.... :?

There's a nice feature article on this airplane in the brand-new issue of Warbirds International Mustangs (Summer 2014). Lots of great vintage photos, and a few of current resto progress.
