A bit of news from the NMUSAF regarding their A-1E Skyraider

When we pulled the A-4 apart for the Millville army airfield muesum, it was supposed to be defueled. While we were lifting the front fuselage up off the wing we found out the wing still had fuel in it. Not just a couple of gallons either. If i remember right, it was over 100 and at least 20 on the ground. There where some unhappy people that day in the hanger.

That was the leaded good stuff probably.
Purple 115/145 which today is extinct.

I sympathize with you, when I did the T-33 for IMM (Vincennes) I was told that there would be no fuel, hydraulic oil or any other type of fluids! Imagine my surprise when we started disassembling it and got a face full of fuel! I guess I should be thankful it did not have as much as your situation! :shock:
