There was a lot of budget cutbacks in those years.
Pilots jumped at any chance to get some time behind the stick while an aircraft was in motion.

We all know the USAF did use some gliders (primarily for rescue), but details and photos are sparse.

I've seen a photo of a USAF C-119 towing a British Horsa glider over the airfield of RAF Abingdon which dates from the period when the C-119 were also being used to airdrop British Heavey drop platforms.
