Canadian F-86 color scheme question

Thu Aug 30, 2012 11:50 am

I'm looking for a unique paint scheme for an F-86 model. Can anybody tell me what the color codes or names are for this Canadian F-86? Better yet does anybody have a three view that shows the paint pattern? I always thought that the bottom of the fuselage was grey but in this picture it is blue.

I've never used after market decals but this might be the time to do it. Are there any available for this version of the plane? How about kits in these style markings?

Thank you Todd! This is exactly what I'm looking for. I see on the decal sheet that it calls for Dark Sea Grey + Dark Green over PRU Blue. Anybody know if there is a number associated with these colors? I don't know if its called milspec or something different being metric and all!

Now if I can just find a three view.

www.scalemodeldb.com will take you to a series of cross reference paint Mfgrs color charts w/F.S. # and you can match say HUMBROL with TESTORS product numbers

The colors in question are British colors which are designated by name rather than by number. There are various tables that match these colors to approximate US federal standard equivalents, generally with some degree of error that is acknowledged in the better such tables. Ideally, your best bet is to use a paint line that is formulated to match the British colors and skip the step of matching to approximate US equivalents.

As for a 3-view, the cheap way is to type "RCAF Sabre" into the image tab of your search engine. Several 3-views will come up. If you order the decals that have been recommended, you'll get a plan view as well. If you really want to become an expert, order Patrick Martin's outstanding book on RCAF finish and markings from this period:

Thank you August. I found a couple of three views on google when I first started this project but none of them I found have the paint demarcation lines shown. That's actually what I'm hunting for. Something that shows the the paint patterns. There are some really nice ones on the web that show profile or quartering views but I'm not having much luck with a top view. I'm probably going to buy the decal sheet, I just hope it shows the paint patterns I'm looking for. I know most instruction sheets would, I just don't have any experience with aftermarket stuff.

I found plenty of color pix on line-best of luck with your search and I hope your local hobby shop carries HUMBROL paints or you're stuck trying to match from, say TESTORS paints.
