Darwin, Australia war heritage

Thu Aug 16, 2012 9:01 am

Recently seen at Darwin Airport, Australia - while i was reporting on the RAAF Pitch Black exercise - was this ex RAAF HGU-2A/P dual visor flight helmet from the 1970s-80s era with dual visor single ramshorn cover - https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid ... nt_count=1 and https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid ... nt_count=1

For the interest Darwin Airport is built in an area where in WW2 RAAF B-24 Liberator bombers were at one time parked in revetments between missions and was also attacked many times by the Japanese in bombing raids from 1942 onwards - such as the book in the case next to helmet points out - Darwins Air War....

A report on the aviation heritage centre / museum located at the airport will be in a future blog story. They house the only other B-52 BUFF on display outside the USA / UK... a B-52G model along with some very nice RAAF aircraft and much WW2 relics including Japanese fighters shot down over Darwin.....
