Just to clarify, do you mean a Packard-Merlin (1650 cubic inches) or Allison (1710 cubic inches)?

If I was in your spot (and if you haven't already done so), I would contact Mike Nixon at Vintage V-12's. He would be one of a handful on this planet who would know what the current demand for and realistic value of a -1 would be.

As always, WIXers would love to see pics.

I sold a complete V1650-1 about 2 years ago. I talked to all the engine builders out there to see what they are worth. After all the feed back, I sold the Merlin for $6500.

I don't believe there are any flying applications left for them today. Roush has one for sale all ready to go and it's been sitting in their lobby for years as a display piece. From what I can tell, there is almost no commonality between them and the -3, -7, -9. The parts that would "fit", were significantly improved in the later dash number engines so for sure you would never build a later engine with early parts.

There are several MJ-100 Spitfire replicas that are planning to use 1650-1's. Since there is no plan to fly the airplanes at high altitudes why not? Here's a few pics of Bob Deford's Spit so you know what I'm talking about. He used an Allison but others are going with the -1, so that the plane has a Merlin even though it's not the right dash number. The fact that the later models will set you back well into the 6 figures also has a lot to do with it. I bought the Engine from Warbird51 and it was a great deal, terrific person to work with.
James, Jmac55, please PM me if you have one for sale, I am interested and know someone who also might be interested.
