Rain and blustery strong winds didn't bode well for any warbird flying today ~ so I toddled off home after lunch.

Imagine my surprise when I got a phone call from someone on the airfield to say there was a P-47 sitting outside the American Air Museum !

Having had the prop re-balanced ~ a "Snafu" engine run was in order ~ under the watchful eyes of the engineering team .....

Image

With the temps and gauges in the green ~ the power was pushed up

Image

After engine shut-down ~ the anticipation began to build when the pilot stayed seated while talking to the ground crew.

And then it was off into the blue yonder for an air test

Image

Followed by a short practice display

Image

And back for a smooth landing on the grass runway with winds gusting to 32 knots

Image

Pilot Stu Goldspink looked rightly pleased with his efforts in the cockpit today

Well done The Fighter Collection as they beaver away in preparation for Flying Legends at the end of the month

I once asked Stu what his favorite airplane (aeroplane!) was to fly, thinking it would be some mark of Spitfire, and he instantly replied "P-47!" . Big, comfortable, and apparently a nice flying machine.

Yessiree...

Thanks for sharing these killer photos! I miss seeing this big'ole gal around these parts... *sniffle*

Here's some not-so-killer, but still kinda nice shots of her in Geneseo and Hamilton, respectively... circa the early-mid '80s...

Just out of curiosity, if anyone has a manual for one, how much runway does a P-47 need at say, 2800' ASL and 15C? I know we've had P-51's here at my home strip but I doubt 3000' would handle a Jug. I'd guess a minimum runway would be 4000'-ish.

I've seen P-47's take off in less runway length than the P-51's they were taking off with....and I was stunned!
