Yes that is the prototype for the quick change .50 cal barrels for the chin turret.

Yah I'm thinking this photo has been "doctored" up a bit? Something looks strange with that wing behind the B-17 in the forground.

A poor attempt at colorizing a photo too it appears. The 'blue sky' is showing through the wing tip of the 17 behind the lead.

That picture was posted on Reddit a day or two ago. The original was B&W and seen above is a colorized version. Someone had posted a link to their grandfathers album. I'll have to see if I can find a link to the imgur thread with the rest of the photos.
