Flew down to the naval weapons research base in goose greek, sc to visit my sister and nephew for a week. Went to patriots point and took some pictures. Sorry for the high-noise hanger deck photos, i was just using my old cheap pocket camera.

Interesting, thanx for posting those. My only visit to the Yorktown was 31 years ago this summer...for a 1981 view of that same Mitchell when it was on deck in white civvies, see the "Warbirds in Civvies" thread currently running.

When I visited in '81, on deck were a Tiger and a Cougar trainer...any idea where those went?

S.

The cougar is still there, it's in the hanger deck but the picture didn't turn out. It's the closest aircraft to the welcome desk right next to the flight sim i think. there's also a corsair 2 and a crusader on the flight deck. I don't think I saw a tiger anywhere on board. Thanks for the heads-up on the civilian scheme photo of that b-25, looked pretty nice in that civilian trim!

With 2 daughters calling Charleston home I have been to Patriots Point many times and I still think it's cool that they use tailhooks to support the rope to surround the aircraft.

There's no F-11F Tiger on the Yorktown. Wish there was. It's one of my favorite jets.

By the way, the USS Laffey DD-724 is coming back to Patriots Point next week after a 2-1/2 year absense for hull rebuild. She will be moored to the pier off the starboard side of the Yorktown, where the sub is now. The sub is being moved to a spot astern of the Yorktown.

Thanks for the photos of a very nice collection. :) :D I wonder how the museum is doing financially these days. Good to hear the destroyer is coming back.

Went thru Charleston in September 1990 on my way to Panama and spent two days going over the Yorktown. I so enjoyed that time there!
