i was searching around today for photos of the very glorious but very forgotten aircraft that is betweem the dc-4 and dc-6, the mighty dc-5..

does anyone know what thew registration was on this one, ive searched long and far but gotten nothing!!

or any reference sites that have all the registrations etc etc??

As it has 'Douglas' on the nose, it is probably the prototype, which was NX21701.

I dunno, I wonder if the great William T. Larkins would have any information. Lord knows he has tons of photos and information.

That's 'ROVER' the prototype DC-5 (NC 21701). The owner traded in his Douglas DOLPHIN amphibian on it..OH, YEAH the owner was a guy named Bill Boeing Sr. :wink:

thanks again...thats it you got it on the head!!

btw does anyone know if there are any propper colour photos like this or is this it? im trying to see if i cant paint an aircraft up like this for flightsim

More info-Boeing handed it over to the NAVY as an R3D-3 buaerno 08005. Broken up 6/30/1946.
5 DC-5 airframes delivered to KLM for the east Indonesian routes, used to evacuate civilians until captured by the Japanese. At least one ferried to Japan and tested by the Japanese Army, painted in standard green over gray JAAF scheme with a white band on aft fuselage and hinomarus. All earlier R3D-1's were used by the NAVY or MARINES in mostly bare metal, color pictures are pretty rare, that color picture is the first I've seen of ROVER that wasn't B&W. Hit GOOGLE IMAGES under R3D-3

Even ABCD list is pretty vague on this type, lists no DC-5's and a handful of R3D-1/-3 with BUAERNO's all over the map.

thats crazy, shes a beautiful aircraft that no one likes, except for me and um the ohter guy that said he does...

i have seen the japanese one ,but am amazed on the looks of this paint job or well chromeized livery, i can see how it wasnt used for alot of pax flights but used for military flights if so id like to say that im more interested in findind out how many dc-5s were converted or created as the R3D

You can get the businessmans version of it's history by GOOGLING 'Serial Numbers for DOUGLAS DC-5' and pick up the link about 5th down DOUGLAS DC-5/R3D @ http://www.jrlucariny.com/site2008/dc5/dc5html
21 aircaft total ordered as airliners, 7 ordered by the Navy, 3 for the Navy and 4 as paratroopers for the USMC. Boeings airplane was his personal toy and was setup with 16 seats.(think of it as the round motored G-5 of it's day) The airplane was derived from the DB-7 project which later became the A-20 HAVOC, Boeing built a fair number of DB-7's @ now gone forever Plant 2 in Seattle.
Bill Boeing Sr. and Don Douglas were really very good friends and Boeing backed Douglas' idea for having needed war effort designs built by other companies with no patent infringement threats which is basically how Douglas and Vega wound up building B-17's when Boeing @ Plant 2 peaked out @ 16 airplanes a day, and later that's how how Douglas would wind up building much needed B-47's during Korea
