I was there, crewing the P-47 (which involves putting gas and oil into it, and then cleaning same off the outside of it after flight). Got lots of pics, but they're in the can (yes, I am a dinosaur, still shoot film).
Not withstanding the acts, this airshow was really poor. There was a total of 6 military static aircraft that came in, and half of those were foreign. The military component to the show was a flyby of based T-38s and T-6s, a C-17 flyby (no demo), and a F-16 demo. That was it. Sheppard usually has a very good show, with a good variety of aircraft coming in to inspire all the trainees. Not so this time.
The warbird and civilian components did a good job, very nice variety of birds. Seeing a high speed, high G demo by one of the 4 flying Jennies in the world was a hoot. The PT-17 demo was awesome, when they say that guy has a clearance down to ground level, they aren't kidding. I saw his wingtip parting grass on the ground in front of me during the Friday practice.
The Aeroshell T-6 team was there with borrowed aircraft. Something I did not know before is that on AF bases, performing warbirds of US manufacture MUST have paint schemes that are 80% militarily accurate (whatever that means). So, they couldn't fly their own aircraft, with the sponsor's logos and paint schemes.
The flip floppers were limited to 2, which was a nice balance. I've seen too many shows with 4-6 of these dedicated aerobatic acts, and they all run together.
Tuna did a great job horsing the Skyraider around (Hi Tuna!)
The airshow at Sheppard AFB this year is the first airshow out of the last 4 that did not have David Schultz Airshows LLC involvement. I wonder if that might have something to do with things. Hmmmmm. Just sayin'.
