This post was originally posted by Mike Furline, unfortunately some people decided to hijack it and it ended up with three pages of bitching about something that had nothing to do with the original post. Rather than spend 30 minutes deleting all the pointless bickering I have decided to repost the original information. Let's try to take it easy and keep comments related to the post they are in. Thanks.

At the 11:06 mark in the video John Hinton is taking off in a P-51, looks like the tail never comes off the ground. Three point to flying? Haven't seen that before.

Per the POH, this is the best way to do a minimum take-off run in the P-51. I teach students to do this in the Cub, too. Will contribute more to the discussion later.

Quote:
To accomplish the minimum-run takeoff (figure 2-3), lower flaps 15 to 20 degrees. Keep airplane in three-point attitude and allow it to fly itself off ground in this position. As soon as air-borne, allow airspeed to build up and climb out at 100 mph. Retract landing gear when airspeed reaches a safe value. Raise flaps above 200 feet altitude.

(and yeah, someday I would really love to fly one. That's why I have the POH!)

I really like the high quality of the video, much better than the usual camera phones or fuzzy airshow footage. :D Oh and the aircraft are nice too. That P-40C has me drooling.
