Any AT-6 aircraft in WW2 ZI training colours?

G'day folks,

I'm just wondering whether anyone has details or pictures of current AT-6 aircraft restored to USAAF ZI training schemes? I'd love to see some, especially given that the scheme seems to be not overly common these days. The simple scheme with the big numbers is a favourite of mine.

The problem with the T-6's is that almost none of the surviving examples wore historical schemes, in spite of there are many many accurate paint schemes possible.

I need to be educated a bit...what does "ZI" stand for ?? It seems that I should know as I 've seen it elsewhere in previous WIX postings.

I noticed that too, in entrants for the RR Heritage Trophy. This is John Muszala's/Pacific Fighter's AT-6, that could be seen at the 2010 Oshkosh show, in bare factory-markings, now with the training squadron colors applied.

Some great air-to-air photos of the aircraft in its new paint scheme, before the serial number was added:

Hi Chris

These Z.I. field letters are a big can of worms! Since they were General Orders of some AAF Command they were many duplications of letters.

The ones you mention X- = Luke, Z- = Las Vegas, Q- = Kirtland are bases of West Coast AAF Training Center, Flying Training Command note the hyphen after the field letter which is typical of West Coast AAF Training Center. On the other hand some fields of Southeast AAF Training Center, Flying Training Command, used two letters like CO=Columbus, TY=Tyndall, and SP=Spence and some fields using just a single letter like E=Eglin. This comes from the only known General Order on these field letters issued by Southeast AAF Training Center and it specially states not to used hyphens.

Now comes the can of worms, there is also an E-= Merced AAfld, West Coast AAF Training Center also using BT-13s like Eglin! And that is just the begining they are least 6 fields from various Commands that use X, it does sound cool base “X”.
