The Russians Have Arrived!

Thu Sep 08, 2011 5:11 am

Here are a few photos of what we have been doing at the Heritage Centre. We had been trying to get everything 'Russianized' at the museum to welcome the Russian team ahead of the beginning of the Rugby World Cup tomorrow ( Friday) - we have repainted the 1968 Battle of Britain film mock up Hurricane gate guard in 151 Wing colours ( Commanded by Kiwi, Ramsbottom-Isherwood who got the Order of Lenin) at the time of it being hastily painted in VVS colours for hand over to overall commander, Kuznetsov. As you will be aware, the Wing went with the first Hurricanes to Northern Russia to train the VVS pilots in late 1941.

The N.11 wears a nice Russian scheme (we know the pilot but not anything about the aircraft markings) as does the N.16 - this is representing a fighter of the 22 KAO in September 1917.

A Morane 35 is being built to hang from the entrance roof - it will have a grappling hook as used to try and bring down another aircraft by the pilot, Kazakov.

The team arrived this afternoon for a private ceremony to receive their World Cup caps. Of course it wasn't as happy an occasion as it should have been, with the flag at half mast for the loss of all those ice hockey players :(

regards
Dave
