Canadian Forces Arctic Recovery?

Tue Aug 23, 2011 4:00 pm

I found these photos on the Canadian Forces Image Gallery. There are no captions with the photos, but I assume they're from the military exercise OP Nanook 2011 currently underway near Resolute Bay, Nunavut in the Canadian Arctic.

Any ideas as to the aircraft type/identity they're recovery parts from?

Fascinating photos.... looks like a star and bar on the wing, along with dayglo colors. Wing and prop look definitely B-17 like... but it's so hard to tell. Good find! Hopefully we hear more. I hope they saved what they recovered.

Cheers,
Richard

Reported as a C-54 that crashed into Resolute Bay in 1951. Found it here:

Looking more closely, after downloading the high resolution images, I think it might actually be from a C-54, rather than a B-17.

Here's the video and story. It looks like a joint op betweeen the Canadian Forces and US Coast Guard. I didn't even know they (USCG) were doing that. I usually hear about those things.

Coincedently...there was a commercial crash that happened while the joint ops was going on at Resolute Bay. 12 fatalities in that one.

How deep was it? It appears the 'travelling decorators' had paid it a visit and 'tagged' it.
Now we need to find the C-54 that disappeared in Alaska in 1948 with over $1 Million onboard--

Cool story, amazing how well preserved the paint is. That cold water does wonders!
