Hey all,

Having dropped one son off at a basketball camp, I found myself just up the road from the good CAF folk at Fleming Field...figured it'd be downright rude if I didn't stop by (Picture quality courtesy my daughter's point n' click).

The friendly guide didn't have an answer for the extra sheet on the door. Any takers? Rich?

She's in good hands though; several wrenches on hand getting her all better again.

Haha, when I first read the title of your thread I thought you were talking about the Burt Rutan design.

Although it would have been interesting to see shots of a Quickie, I kinda prefer the pictures of the planes you posted.

Peace,

David M

The extra plate on the inner gear door is a "rub strip" for the tire. I don't recall if it's to stop the wheel from spinning during retraction, or keep it from damaging the door. Any P-51 drivers here know the details?

The smooth skin strip serves to help the tire slide on the door during extension, particularly an extension where the hyd system isn't functioning and the gear free falls from its own weight.
It shouldn't hit this door during retraction as the inner doors shouldn't close until both mains are fully retracted.

I have about 100+ hours in that BT-13 back in the mid 80s, and a few in the L-5. Great bunch of people.

Hi Dan,

Thanks for stopping by the hangar. A couple minor corrections to your captions. The Mustang actually spent the winter here in the frozen north and has not been to Texas since Airshow in October last year. The spinner is off for a routine inspection. The cowls are off to facilitate chasing leaks which as time is logged on the engine, becomes an ever more time consuming task! Rich nailed the answer regarding the SST rub strips on the clam doors….Vlado will be happy to see the inner door pans are silver, not green! DOH!

Poor Miss Mitchell and especially her crew. In early May one of her engines spit a gasket on the blower and started spewing and consuming oil. The engine was removed and sent to Ray Anderson for repair only since it is a very low time engine and running perfectly otherwise. The Mitchell crew had a fresh engine on hand and made the decision to hang that one rather than wait on the necessary repairs to the other. Well, the fresh overhaul they hung lasted about 10 hours before it started tossing silver off the main bearing. Note to self…always select a reputable engine builder. To his credit, Ray turned the repair engine in record time, gave it a good fish-eye, blessed it and sent it back. Even though none of these engines originated from Andersons shop, he treated us like we’ve been long time customers and really went to the plate for us. Ray Anderson is the best! Anyway, the engine you see being hung is the repaired engine going back on. The guys on the Mitchell crew deserve a hat’s off and a big bow for doing TWO engine changes in the last two months. I hate to even think about having to do something like that on the Mustang. To Larry Utter and crew…you guys are the best Mitchell experts going, bar none!

Thanks for that, John. Obviously my ADD hasn't improved over the years...

Great pics.

FYI, there is a vintage MN Confederate Air Force Bare Assets Large Tshirt on ebay right now. Don't know where they're popping up from, but I got a Medium shirt of the same design last year. 8)

Thank you lads for getting this wonderful bird back together! My wife bought me a ride on Miss Mitchell for my 60th birthday. I am signed up to be on the July 8th flight at Airlake and I have received a email confirming my reservation. I think I saw and heard her the other night when I was outdoors. Just a little to far away to see for sure. I live East of Farmington and she was Northeast bound west of town. I would gladly take a rain check for safety though.
