Kind of convoluted to go to a link where you have to log into Facebook and then search for the National Museum of Naval Aviation Facebook page to find the pictures. But they are nice photos and it's good to see the Coronado being moved in doors. Can't wait to see the restoration completed.

Here is a link to a thread earlier this month concerning the Naval Aviation Museum's Coronado:

Fantastic!

But....what's up with that paint job? Dark Sea Blue over White? I don't think I've ever seen that scheme on any USN aircraft..much less a Coronado. The only period photos I've turned up show them in either Blue Gray/Light Gray, "Three Tone" or overall Dark Blue. Is the museum planning to add some Intermediate Blue to the sides as they finish up the restoration?

I wouldn't worry about the facebook link. Just mention it when you post. Hate to miss out on some great photos just because they're on facebook. If people don't want to log in or register, that's their choice. Makes me want to get back down there to the museum.

Wow! I've seen some hangar tetris played before, but that's somethin'! Looks great, but what's with the wingtips? Are those taking longer to restore, or was someone just jonesin' to get this bird inside where more people could see it sooner?

I'm assuming it wouldn't fit through the door with the wings and tails attached. It'll have to be assembled inside..kinda like a ship in a bottle.

Hmm. That makes an amazing amount of sense...

Having been in there before, and hopefully going back again, I wonder if the wingtips will even fit inside that space. I suppose they worked it out before hand. Hope someone makes a time lapse of tucking that thing in. It'll be interesting for sure.

I really like the PBY. Anybody know of any PBY restorations going on? There must be quite a few that were former air tankers that would probably make great starting points for a restoration. Speaking of that are there still any active PBY tankers?

PBY's, yes there are a few. PB2Y's, this is the only one in existence.

PBY are cool but I doubt I could afford to fill the tanks with gas. I do see alot of really nice P-51s for sale on the web these days though at prices I have not seen since 10 years ago. At least with the recession prices are becoming more affordable.
