P-51 ID Question

I was poking around the net and found this P-51 pic.
Does anybody recognize this P-51?

Not entirely certain where that shot was taken but I do remember seeing the airplane and climbing on the wing when it was in the vicinity of Syracuse NY. This would be my senior year of high school - 1972.

One major difference between when I saw it and this photo is that when I saw it, the radiator air scoop was "twisted" off and a crumpled wreck...in the photo you supplied it looks intact. So my guess would be that the photo was taken before 1972.

Plane was at Brewerton NY . Just north of Syracuse.NY at an auto dealer

I was there then we lived in Oriskany. It was pre 1972. Maybe 1970 or so. Originally it was across the street from the car lot (Chrysler dealership) as in this picture. Then they moved it where you see most of the pictures of it. I think there were some issues about how much of this airframe ended up in Geraldine. The data plate made it but ....

I think you will find that if anything didn't make it into Geraldine it is the data plate. The i.d. used to register this 51 is from an aircraft MACO sales imported from Latin America. One which crashed on its ferry flight in the 60s.

Was this a well known fixture in the area drawing attention at the time, or something you would "have to know about"?

TJ... I agree you are right..... It was the other way around. I've got so many things going on anymore, its hard to keep all the aviation history straight in my head.....

BTW.... If you look in back of the picture there is a rail road crane.... There were also some other rail road items there, 2 small steam engines (I mean automobile sized) as well as a couple assorted railroad cars. Wish I had a camera back then....
