It will be interesting to see which museums will be getting one.

NASM will be getting Discovery.

My money is on the NMUSAF getting Atlantis.

That leaves Endevour and Enterprise up for grabs.

I visited the Udvar-Hazy center this past Sunday and Enterprise was "opened up" lots of hatches were open and there were lots of tool boxes around. Looked like she was getting ready for the move.

If it were up to me to pick one I would go for Enterprise. I know most people would go for the ones that "were there", but being a prototype airframe I think the Enterprise is something special. It represents the technology of the mid-1970s the best as it was never upgraded (the others have modern glass cockpits). It would be a real gem for recognizing the engineering accomplishments and the excellent work of the and test pilots.

The wing leading edges were removed as test subjects for proving the theories of what happened to Colombia. Did Enterprise ever get replacements? If I were to put it on display I would do so with those components removed, perhaps displayed at ground level. There is a story to be told there by doing so.

What do you think? Which orbiter would you pick?

Here're my picks:

Discovery: NASM (well-known at this point)

Atlantis: NMUSAF

Endeavour: Kennedy Space Center (in what looks to be a phenomenally cool display)

Enterprise: Evergreen (dare suggest displayed on TOP of an SCA?)

Assuming NMUSAF gets a shuttle, I wonder when it will arrive. I would definitely make it a point to be there when it lands at Wright Field.

It will take almost a year of "de-servicing" and "safing" before it will be ready to transport for display.

My guess at locations:

Discovery - NASM
Atlantis - NMUSAF
Endeavour - Seattle MoF
Enterprise - Kennedy Space Center

There will be no government shutdown so barring any unforseen delays its looks like the shuttle placement announcement is a go for Tuesday.

You guys are forgetting that Johnson Space Center in Houston wants one. Transport would be easy.

Actually, transport to Johnson is a nightmare unless you dismantle the Shuttle...which is forbidden by NASA.
