My ex's mom ,who turns 90 this yr.used to build P-39's for Bell in N.Y. this generation is right behind the last WWI vet. to her it was just a job and I guess it really was.however ,thank the next WWII vet you meet.

My grandmother (87) worked a variety of jobs during the war. She said she and her friends would all get jobs at the same place and as soon as they got bored they'd all move on to the next one.

The ones that stick out were working on Maywest's and life rafts and painting filing cabinets.

She also has a few good stories about making a couple cross-country trips during the war to visit friends in the military.

My wife and I are lucky enough to be living with her so I'll have to see if i can get anymore stories out of her... but most of them revolve around partying.

A great aunt of mine passed about a year ago. In going through her estate, we found pictures from when she was a "messenger girl" at the Bell bomber plant in Marietta, GA. Her job was to roller skate around the production floor carrying messages between various managers.

I think OSHA would frown on that today.
