I shot these T-28s back in the summer of 1984 at the Naval Aviation Museum (Pensacola). These were parked out back, apparently the museum was going to use them for trade bait. Notice that they were not in-processed at AMARC - no spraylat or inventory numbers to be seen.

First, a question, if anyone knows, then a challenge.

There is quite a spread on the BuNos on these birds (and age). Does anyone know if there was a specific requirement for the birds to be selected for trade bait, or was it just pot luck? It would seem that if they were looking for the best ones to use as trade bait, they'd all be the newest block of BuNos.

My challenge - can you tag on some information as to what happened to each of these aircraft? What registration did it end up as, where is it, and what's it painted as? A photo would be nice, if those can be provided.

I know I could look all this up, but this ought to be more fun.

Good info, but isn't that cheating a bit? ;)

The link on N281MS is incorrect, not sure what the problem is with it.

These T-28s were supposed to be used as trade bait ... Any ideas on what the NAM got in return for them?

Could you send me those photos for Warbird-Central.com?

I see you have one of 137663 that I have on my site in flying condition now.

Thanks!

The trade material was varied, and there was seemingly no set standard. For example Glen Hyde traded with the Navy many times. He traded a Corsair and received several T-28's, and IIRC an Albatross, an R4D and some Huey stuff. They may not have all been on the same trade, I've slept since then, and can not remember all of the details. The Navy dispersed all of the current inventoried T-28's through the museum as the program was winding down. I know of another situation where a static TBM and B-25 were traded for a flyable F7F. This was yet another one that helped bring an end to NAVY / Marine Corps trades for a while.
