The way folks like Tom Reilly work, I don't think it's too far gone yet! The most significant part left is the relatively intact wing and nacelles. Checkout the condition of one of the main gear tires!

Rubber doesn't corrode and will last a long time when not exposed to the sunlight.
It would make a good basis for a restoration.
I don't know if the money this will cost can come from any restoration effort funded through the gov.

If un-restorable it would make a neat diorama at some museum someplace people could see it.

Think of the EPA study that would be necessary to get her out of there.

Agreed. I've often thought that the Pacific Aviation Museum in Hawaii would be a good choice. It could fulfill two roles there ... (1) representing the B-24 as a type and (2) helping tell the story of the Aleutian campaign in the PTO.

I wonder how one would even start to get the ball rolling.

If not permitted to recover by civilians, I wonder is the NMUSAF could get interested, claim ownership and recover it? Better off with them then out there.

I'm sure tickling an ear of a major politician with ties to Alaska might be a good start, assuming they could be interested in such a project. I'm sure a good sales pitch could go a long way.

I don't want to see this sidetracked into a politics mud match, I just think that it could be a starting place.

That wing sure looks to be in good condition. It's a shame it can't be salvaged. What's the official reason for "hands off" exactly?

Is there one gun still in the upper turret?

Before I say this please keep in mind I mean nothing political by itother than the recovery of this aircraft. I do not like politics. That being said, Sarah Palin is a pilot, and aviation buff with political strings. is it worth a shot to try an e-mail to her office.

By the looks of it it's already being recovered by civilians. ONE PIECE AT A TIME.

If the reason for not recovering it has to do with preserving Alaska's heritage, then IMO that's right up there with some of the PNG policies. You may like the idea of keeping it place but visitors are going to continue to cut trinkets off of her. Besides the leaving them in place for the reason of "preserving Alaska'a Heritage" doesn't hold water because precidents have been set with a couple previous recoveries.

For a moment I thot this was the same Alaskan B-24 wreck as this one (41-23853). Close but it's not.

It is.

(But then we can only hope she doesn't think a B-24 is a Russian aircraft or she'll want to nuke it  )
