F-105's at Lackland

Mon Mar 16, 2009 12:31 pm

was nosing around some aerial mapping website over the weekend and in the middle of Lackland AFB there are 9 F-105's sitting fat and pretty all in a row on a piece of concrete. Anyone know what or why they are there.

I seem to recall that they were being used to train ground security teams.

I used Google search, I found it works better than the WIX search!

F-105's at Lackland

OK, here is a possiblity. There used to be a bunch of F-105's located at nearby Brooks AFB that were used for "Battle Damage Repair Class". I spotted them back in the late 1980's located at the end of an old runway. Doing a goggle.earth search on Brooks I noted they seem to have disappeared. Perhaps they are the same A/C just relocated. Brooks seems to be going major re-development as its now called City-Base or something like that.

I saw them in the mid 80s (85 maybe?) and they were used for security traing. At that time they were already located inside the fenced compound that they appear on google earth. They had arrived not too terribly long before I photographed them and still looked pretty good. Recent photos show repainting and the canopies painted over.

I photographed all of them, but have not scanned all of the slides. Here are some shots from the wayback machine.

jdvoss,

I can tell you the 105's at Lackland have been in place since at least the mid 80's , I used to drool over them when my father would take me to Lackland. Going to do my best to photograph them inside the fence on my next trip home. I will be sure to post.

That's a lot of excellent stuff just sitting around for security drills. At least it's not fire rescue drills or those things would be a melted hulk. Wonder if there is any future intent of preservation of them when they no longer are interested in security drills with them.

I know this is an older post, but I was doing a Google search on the F-105 and I thought I could add some info.

I am researching the F-105 because I am constructing the cockpits for this plane, a 1/6 scale F-105: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mGmJMspLL3Q

First I'll go back a bit, I went through Security Forces training at Lackland in the mid 80's, at that time the F-105's looked as though they had just parked after a flight. They were leaking hydraulic fluid in places and still had the smell of a jet and you could open the various hatches. In the cockpits many had manuals or flight logs of some type sitting on the dash. Our trainers would act as though they were working on the aircraft in the training scenario, they would open hatches and start pulling and pushing on things acting as maintenance personnel, I just loved those planes. Today they have all been painted glossy paint jobs and the canopies are painted over with blue paint, all openings have been pop riveted shut, they look dead.

Today the Collings Foundation is trying to acquire all of them to build one flying example, I guess they need all of them for spare parts, although they are internally complete as far as I could tell. Since the AF does not want this it will take an act of Congress to get them.

Brooks AFB, I used to fly Radio Control planes out there in the 90's, all the way up until 2000. I took some pictures of the F-105's, they were in very bad shape, nothing but gutted hulks. They would punch holes in them and practice repair. One day some guys showed up and set charges right near the main spar on every one but two of the 105's. It was sad to see them fall on their side when the wing broke at the fuselage. They then got the cutting wheels out and torches and while cutting they were also souvenir hunting, cutting pieces to save. The ones that had ejection seats had those taken as souvenirs. A museum got two of the Thuds, I'm not sure who, the rest of the planes were cut up. Here are some pictures just before they were destroyed.

Notice the large lead weights in the empty gun bay.

I hate to see any 105 destroyed but those pictures are of historic F-105G wild weasel models....AAAARRRGHHH!!!!! beyond a doubt all vietnam vets that saw significant action. The one with the sharkmouth was probably a Georgia ANG example. Man seeing that just ruins one's day.
