Rear View Mirrors

I think that the British used them first on Spitfires and maybe Hurricanes. Then 8th AF pilots began acquiring them from the Brits to install on Mustangs and Thunderbolts. I don't know if they became an official option on USAAF planes.

They are not homemade, they are made by Republic.

They are the originals replaced in the field by the round "Spitfire" type mirror.

If anyone has one of these round mirrors please contact me, we need one for our
P-47 at Duxford.

As an aside, the use of rear view mirrors on fighters started in World War 1, I don't think they came from the factory with them but they were added in the field. Here's Max Holtzem with his Fokker D.VII
