Are the slats between #1 and #2 engine for depth charges, etc?

Bomb bay doors. The B-24 style items are often regarded as a problem in flying boats. ;)

More seriously, there are a couple of designs (Martin Mariner, for one) that use the engine nacelle aft fairings (where undercarriage or gear would normally be) for the weapons bay.
