Wonder where they were while hoisting the STOOF? it's BUNO 133071 isn't on Baughers list, and the S2's on either side of it went to the Italian Navy in 1964, did anyone notice a sort of famous pile of steel docked behind the recovery? BB 62 the MIGHTY MO'.

Great shots, Dave, thanks for sharing. Any chance you can provide me a high res scan of the Sikorsky HRS helicopter which might be clear enough to show the Bureau Number on the tail boom? Sure would be appreciated as I don't believe I have that one ID'd on my site. Thanks!

We're the Stoofs onboard for ferrying? I don't recall reading or seeing pictures of them operating off of CVEs.

I'm not sure if I have the full report but I'll look for it if it's of interest. I'd also like a higher resolution version of those pictures for that blog entry and permission to use them there and in Steve Ginter's forthcoming S2F-1 monograph.

The history card for 133071 gives it as having an accident with VS-26 on the 3rd of May 1954, whilst assigned to USS Antietam. It was moved to O&R Norfolk on the 17th of June 1954 and then on to O&R Jacksonville, 29th of November 1954. It was struck off Navy charge there on the 4th of February 1955.

One of the S2F design requirements was deployability on CVEs assigned to ASW, replacing the Grumman AFs. (The A4D Skyhawk was also required to operate from CVEs.) The last of them were, however, mothballed shortly after the S2F reached operational squadrons, replaced by Essex-class carriers.
