That was my Grandfather. I believe this accident occurred April 22, 1944:

22-Apr-44 | Target Support | Hamm, German | 1730 | N/A | 42-8390-I | Takeoff accident (LH MLG tire failure) unhurt, aircraft Category E

He survived and lived until May 15, 2006, where he passed away in Fort Worth, TX at the age of 84. He had 7 children, 10 grandchildren (I'm the oldest), and 1 great-grandchild (2 now).

I've got his mission list from the 353rd FG and found:

14-Oct-43 | Penetration Support | Schweinfurt, German | 1157 | 1416 | 42-22482-M | One-wheel landing (RH MLG failed to extend) due to flak damage

Was it unusual for the pilot to bring the paper drop tanks back from a mission?

The flaps are not extended and drop tanks are still on board.
Probably a take off incident rather than landing.
I think it was mentioned that a tire blew out or wheel broke on take off.

I would agree with that Rich. along with the flaps and tanks, the prop looks like it was under power when it dug in and the cowl flaps look to be in trail.
Looks like a takeoff to me.

Those compressed paper drop tanks are a lot more solid than you might think. The RAF Museum reserve store have one and I was able to inspect it recently.
