Folks....

Made a long overdue run up to Ft.Collins downtown airport today to get some info from Darryl Skurich and the boys and pay a visit to the hangar where the Evergreen Ventures Zero is being restored....I wrote an article on the bird for Classic Wings a number of years ago and wanted to see how it had progressed...the shop guys said that a few weeks ago they had almost the whole plane together but now it was back in the jig and most of the metal had been removed after sizing and measuring and been sent off for heat treatment. The cockpit section, as you can tell, has been attached to the main wing section and this was what was in the jig....the other pic is of part of the new cowling resting on top of the old cowling.

Thought you lot might be interested.

Where did this zero come from? Is it the one that used to live in downtown Atlanta?

No, this is a compilation of parts into one airframe of about 3 birds that were hauled out of the Marshall islands.

You're in Breckenridge and you're asking that? That was a reference to the fact we were discussing Corsair cockpits in one thread and then I went from that to discussing its rival, the Zero. However.....there IS one Corsair in Denver....

So, are they using stove bolts and irrigation pipe in the landing gear?

I don't mean to "name drop," but Evergreen curator Stu Bailey is a former member of our local model club. During a recent visit he was telling us about the Zero. Apparently it's being restored as a clipped-wing A6M3 "Hamp." I think it would be cool if they paint it as one of the "presentation" aircraft captured on Buna.

Beautiful! Sure would be nice if they would fly it a bit.

Not sure what the plan is regerding it flying or not flying, they are tring to get together a working Japanese engine (not sure how that's going), the plane will be restored as a Hamp clipped wing version, true dat. I'm SURE they won't be using stovepipe or anything like it for the landing gear.
