New to my collection: day glo, cold war, and AMARC photos

Hi all,

I haven't been on much lately haven't really had much to contribute. But been busy trying to collect some photos of Day Glo aircraft. But while doing that also was able to grab a few other non day glow, cold war aircraft photos. Some are just prints but at lest I have some evidance of that particular aircraft. Also a few are original and have the photographers name on the back. Also have slides of AMARC taken in 1980. But I will have to convert those which include: a Roman nose NC-130A, and a background shot of early B-52's.

Could someone here help me id'ing the units? :?:

I am not good with that.

I think that first B-47 photo was taken at Eglin AFB in the late 60's early 70's. They had several drone QB-47s that they used in testing there. I remember them being so brightly colored along with the QF-104s that they would bring down from Duke Field for Armed Forces Day Open House.

Thanks for the info. I just wiki'ed the B-47 and it states only two QB-47E's were converted. But apparently there had to be more?

I remember that there were several of them. Two seems too low a number; but, I maybe wrong.

Eglin was a great place to grow up in the 60's & 70's. Always had those great firepower demonstrations. The night battle scene in the John Wayne move - The Green Berets, was filmed during a firepower demonstration that I attended.

The C-124 is one of the first "C" models (The fourth one to be exact). However, it still had the forward facing Flight Engineer's panel. Six airplanes later, they changed over to the side facing FE panel. This photo was taken when it was assigned to the 63rd Troop Carrier Wing at Donaldson AFB. We removed the day glo paint during the Cuban Crisis during October 1962. This C-124 was later transferred with the 63rd on to Hunter AFB in 1963 and then on to Norton AFB.

The C-133 is an "A" model that was assigned to the 1607ATW at Dover AFB

My grandfather use to command at Donaldson. His name was BG Glynne Morgan Jones. Was he there when you were?

Roger, the book looks interesting, but do you know if it has any extensive photo coverage from the glory days of the D/M boneyard (say late 50s through the 60s/70s/80s time frame), or it is primarily focusing on more recent photo coverage?

The introduction of Chapter one has some pictures from the early days, along with the history, but the majority of pictures are from the 80's to current.

Thanks for sharing. Nothing I like better than photos of the great day-glo military birds from the fifties and sixties.
