The P-47 on display as "Fiery Ginger IV" P-47D 42-22668 is reported to be 42-23278. It's a beautiful display. What do we know about '278?

Beautiful aircraft and very nice restoring work.
Always good to see a WWII aircraft in an interesting authentic finish applied with the correct matte paintings.
If only more flyable warbirds were finished this way.

Also always nice when a restored aircraft preserved in a museum stay on the ground, on its wheels, just like an aircraft not some artefact.
So double congrats to the staff of the museum.

I was stationed at Etain AB, France in the early '60s. While I was there, I had the privilege of seeing a great demo flight by a P-47 as part of a special tour sponsored by Republic. In 1963 Republic sent P-47D 42-23278 to Europe with Republic test pilot Glen Bach, who did all the flying. During the '63 Paris Airshow it was parked next to their new F-105D. It was one of the Thunderbolts that Bob Bean had owned before selling it to Republic, who donated it to the NMUSAF in 1964.
