Hello,

Hopefully this isn't too basic of a question. I was given some documentation related to a specific P51D and I would like to trace the airframe's history if at all possible. I did some searching via Google, looking for a list of tail numbers/history/disposition, but no luck yet. So I thought I would go to the experts. Can anyone point me to where I might find some info? The tail number is 44-2688, if that is any help.

Thanks, Dave

A good place to start a trace on an Aircrafts Serial is at J Baugher's site. unfortunately, I am NOT seeing that serial there! If it is actually 44-2688 it seems to fall in a ten serial gap in the middle of a P-39 production batch, very odd. If it is 44-42688 ( this would be the actual tail serial 442688 as the drop the first digit), it is a B-24. Anyone else have an idea?

Thanks! I figured there was something like that out there. So it appears we have a bit of a mystery. I will attempt to include images of 2 scans that I made. The tail number is a stamp at the top of the manual (for a SCR522/542). The same stamp (also with the down-offset on the last "8") is also on the back cover. I suppose the number could actually be 44-12688 which is listed as a P51K exported to the UK, but would an export airframe have this VHF set installed? And on further examination, does the last 8 appear to be upside down?

Thanks again, Dave
